A delicate pottery-making video went viral on popular video sharing app TikTok, attracting more than 45 million views and 4.2 million likes overseas, leading to the popularity of the craftsman who made the miniature ceramics with his fingertips, bamboo sticks and tweezers.

视频账号叫@Chineseporcelain(中国陶瓷),专门发布微型陶艺。

Wang Wenhua, a post-80s ceramicist in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, has been producing miniature ceramics for more than five years. Having learned through lectures at a university, he established his own studio making medium and large-sized porcelains.

This entrepreneurship experience gave him the chance to shift his focus to the creation of miniature ceramics because he believes traditional pottery doesn't easily grab people's attention in the modern world.

"I've seen the world's largest porcelain in Jingdezhen, but never the smallest one, so why not give it a try?"he said. With his smallest artifact at only 2mm in height, Wang endeavors to push the limits of innovation and challenge himself with new designs.

For his miniatures, commonly-used clay molding machines were too big and Wang has to sort out tools for himself — instruments such as bamboo sticks, wire, steel pins and even his daughter's hairpin.

In 2018, Wang Wenhua registered his own account on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, and uploaded videos of his manufacturing process. The videos soon became viral online, with the most popular having been viewed more than 10 million times in China. His videos also earned him a reputation overseas. On TikTok, the view count of his videos have totaled over 120 million.

These miniature ceramics made by Chinese potters have fascinated many overseas netizens. Many foreigners even come to China for professional training while thousands of potters worldwide come to Jingdezhen, hoping to draw inspiration from traditional Chinese porcelains to create more exquisite works.
